STEP is a workforce development program initially developed for Kai Ming, a Head Start early childhood education (ECE) program – providing childcare and family services to underserved communities since 1975. We understand the difficulties associated with finding a substitute teacher when someone calls in sick. We know how hard it is to find qualified subs who are available and will show up when you need them. It is because of these challenges that the STEP program was developed – to recruit, train, and place substitute teachers for early childhood education programs like our own.
The program was launched originally in 2018 thanks to a startup grant from the San Francisco Office of Early Care & Education. Today, we continue this work and have expanded our substitute teacher placement services to include center and home-based childcare providers, serving children ages 0-5 in San Francisco. We are proud to be offering jobs that pay fair wages, creating career pathways for many who are new or re-training for an essential industry, and providing services that are in high demand in our community.
